MN: Shared Parenting Legislation on Govs Desk
Shared Parenting Teeters in the Balance
Here is your chance to stand tall and grab a big victory for the shared parenting movement. But it is imperative that you act immediately.
Everything you need to know follows.
Background:
Both the Minnesota State Senate and Minnesota House have passed bills requiring that each parent get a minimum of 35% of the parenting time—including during temporary orders. Any of you who have been through the custody process knows that temporary orders are crucial—months to years later, they have a way of turning into permanent orders.
Now the bill known as HF322 sits on Governor Mark Dayton’s desk, awaiting his signature. As always, special-interests are working to persuade the Governor to veto the bill.
Here’s where you come in: it is important for you to do these three things immediately:
- Telephone Governor Dayton’s office at (651) 201-3400 and politely request that he sign HF322.
- Email the Governor’s office at http://mn.gov/governor/contact-us/form/ Send a copy of your message to me at nedholstein@fathersandfamilies.org. I will forward them all to Molly Olson (see below).
- Get two other residents of Minnesota to do as you have done, one of whom should be a woman. Family, friends, church acquaintances, colleagues at work—anybody who believes in gender equality and in best interests of children.
Molly Olson and her husband created the Center for Parental Responsibility (CPR) in Minnesota, and have been tireless advocates for shared parenting for a dozen years. Late night meetings, endless meetings at the Statehouse, giving up income opportunities, tens of thousands of telephone calls, training volunteers, putting personal money into the movement… all this and more.
So do this as a sign of respect for Molly. She has earned it.
A telephone call is more effective than an email. Please pick up the phone and make the call. Don’t worry about having to disclose private information, angering anybody, or being an expert—none of those things will matter. Just talk nicely and urge the Governor to sign HF322. It is a numbers game.
Ordinary citizens support shared parenting by a huge margin. Only a few small special interests oppose it. But the special interests always win if citizens don’t act!
If you have any questions about this process, feel free to telephone me at (617) 542-9300 extension 1. I will be pleased to speak with you about this important Minnesota legislation and how we are making changes in other states.
If you want more detail, you will find a great story by Fathers and Families’ Robert Franklin, Esq. at http://www.fathersandfamilies.org/2012/05/10/victory-in- minnesota/.
Together with you in the love of our children,

Fathers of Illegitimate Children Would Lose Rights to Adoption « CBS St. Louis
This bill is an effort by the sick anti-father baby-snatcher lawyer lobby to CONTINUE the on-going denial of parental rights for unwed fathers. To step into the 21st century our society must began to recognize that fathers are not optional and stop the ability of the state and misfit mothers to pick and chose when fathers are wanted. End the war on fathers, require DNA tests of all live births so as to make the state recognize who the true father is and then grant that father equal parental rights. If this is done in every state then we will begin to see fathers be more involved in the raising of their children and will begin to stabilize the divorce and increase the marriage rate. Fathers are parents too!

MN: Shared Parenting Bills Close but Need Push
Give the Minnesota Shared Parenting Legislation a Push
Once again The Children’s Equal and Shared Parenting Act is moving through Minnesota’s House and Senate: HF 322 and SF 1402. Both versions greatly increase the presumption of parenting time for both parents.
Peggy Scott
Rep. Peggy Scott, R-Andover, said, “This bill is really a common sense idea. Why in our day and age when fathers and mothers both work and share equally in the responsibility of raising children, why should that change just because of a divorce?”
Molly Olson, Center for Parental Responsibility said, “The current system we have is far outdated. Forty-five years ago women did not work, and it was not the father’s duty to be a parent. Well, we live in a different culture now. We have had a one-size-fits-all model where one parent is the winner and one is the loser. This bill puts both parents on an equal playing field.”
If you live in Minnesota, share your views with your representative and senator. You may find them here. Also, thank Rep. Peggy Scott for leading on shared parenting legislation in Minnesota.
Robert Franklin has covered shared parenting legislation in Minnesota.

*Poll: Most Don't Want Violence Against Women Act*
Washington, DC/March 27, 2012 -- The broader American public opposes
reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, according to a *U.S.
News and World Report* poll that shows Americans think the law is
ineffectual and unjust. Stop Abusive and Violent Environments (SAVE) notes
the recent *U.S. News* "Debate Club" feature on VAWA has elicited an
overwhelmingly negative reaction to the law:

The top vote-getter in the poll was a commentary by Janice Crouse of
Concerned Women for America, who argued the Violence Against Women Act
should "outrage decent people" because it "victimizes both women and
men." Crouse's statement beat opposing votes by a nearly five-to-one
margin. ****
Taking the other side of the debate was Deborah Tucker, Executive Director
of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence, who argued the

margin.****
While the *U.S. News* poll is not scientific, the sampling represents the
first wide-scale assessment of American voters on the subject of VAWA
